â–¶ Introduction
In a world of digital printing and machine-made textiles, hand block print sarees stand apart as true works of art. Each saree is printed by hand using carved wooden blocks — a process that is slow, labour-intensive, and deeply human. The result is a fabric that carries the warmth of the artisan’s hands in every repeat pattern.
Vasanam India’s cotton handblock sarees celebrate this ancient craft through beautiful Warli and geometric prints.
â–¶ What is Hand Block Printing?
Hand block printing is a textile printing technique where patterns are carved onto wooden blocks, the blocks are dipped in dye, and then stamped repeatedly onto fabric by hand. Each impression is slightly different — this natural inconsistency is what gives hand block print sarees their unique, artisanal character.
The technique has been practiced in India for over 2,000 years and is most famous in the regions of Rajasthan (Bagru, Sanganer), Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.
â–¶ How Hand Block Print Sarees are Made
Step 1: Block carving — artisans carve intricate patterns onto teak wood blocks. A single complex block can take weeks to carve.
Step 2: Fabric preparation — fabric is washed, starched, and laid on a padded printing table.
Step 3: Dye preparation — natural dyes from plants, minerals, and flowers are mixed.
Step 4: Block printing — the block is pressed evenly into the dye and then stamped firmly onto the fabric. This is repeated across the entire length.
Step 5: Drying and fixing — the printed fabric is dried in sun and then washed to fix the colours.
