Madhubani Art on Sarees – Bihar Folk Tradition Explained | Vasanam India
▶ Introduction
Madhubani art — also known as Mithila painting — is one of the oldest surviving folk art traditions in the world, with roots going back over 2,500 years in the Mithila region of Bihar, India. Originally painted on the walls and floors of homes during festivals and ceremonies, Madhubani art has in recent decades found its way onto fabric — and the results are breathtaking.
At Vasanam India, we offer Madhubani printed silk sarees that bring this ancient art form into your wardrobe.
▶ History of Madhubani Art
According to Hindu mythology, Madhubani art was first created when King Janak of Mithila ordered his kingdom’s painters to document his daughter Sita’s wedding to Lord Ram. The tradition has been passed down through generations of women in the Mithila region, primarily from the Brahmin and Kayastha communities.
In 1934, when an earthquake devastated Bihar, British colonial officer William Archer discovered Madhubani paintings on the walls of damaged homes and brought global attention to this art. In 2003, the Indian government granted Madhubani art a Geographical Indication tag.

• Common motifs: Peacocks, fish (symbol of good luck), sun, moon, lotus, Radha-Krishna, wedding scenes
▶ Madhubani on Silk Sarees
When Madhubani art is printed on silk sarees, it creates a perfect fusion of two great Indian traditions — Mithila painting and silk weaving. The rich, luminous surface of silk enhances the vibrant colours and intricate patterns of Madhubani art.
