What is Maheshwari Silk Saree? Origin, Features & Buying Guide | Vasanam India
▶ Introduction
Maheshwari sarees are one of India’s finest and most underappreciated handloom traditions. Originating from the small town of Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, these sarees have been woven for over 250 years and were originally created for Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar.
Today, Maheshwari silk sarees are prized for their lightweight feel, subtle lustre, and beautiful geometric handblock prints. At Vasanam India, we offer a stunning collection of Maheshwari handblock silk sarees at accessible prices.
▶ History and Origin
Maheshwari weaving began in the 18th century in Maheshwar, a town on the banks of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh. Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar, the legendary Maratha ruler, invited weavers from Surat and Malwa to Maheshwar to create a unique textile tradition. She personally supervised the designs, which is why Maheshwari sarees have a distinct royal elegance.
The craft nearly died out in the 20th century but was revived in the 1970s by the late Sally and Richard Holkar. It now has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Government of India.
▶ Key Features of Maheshwari Silk Sarees
1. Fabric Blend: Traditionally woven with a combination of silk warp and cotton weft, giving the saree a beautiful two-tone sheen that is lighter than pure silk but more luxurious than cotton.
2. Reversible Border: The most distinctive feature — the border pattern is the same on both sides of the saree.
3. Geometric Patterns: Maheshwari sarees are known for their geometric handblock prints — stripes, checks, and small motifs inspired by temple architecture.
